Growing Together Into Fall. Harvesting Progress. Planting Possibilities.

Every season tells a story. This month, we're reflecting on the partnerships that grew stronger, the plans taking shape, and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead as we prepare our Community Learning Gardens for another season of learning, service, and growth.

There is something special about this time of year.

The gardens are full of life. Tomatoes are ripening on the vine, peppers are ready to harvest, herbs continue to flourish, and the work we began months ago is beginning to tell its story. Every season reminds me that we are growing so much more than vegetables. We are growing relationships, confidence, curiosity, leadership, and opportunities for people to connect with one another.

At SEED Chattanooga, we believe gardens are more than places where food is grown. They are places where education comes to life, communities come together, and opportunities begin to take root. Every garden we build, every lesson we teach, every volunteer we welcome, and every partnership we cultivate is rooted in one simple belief: when people grow together, communities grow stronger.

As I reflect on the month of July, I realize that not every season is measured by what comes out of the garden. Some seasons are measured by the conversations we have, the partnerships we strengthen, and the foundation we build for what comes next.

That is exactly what July was for SEED Chattanooga.

While our Community Learning Gardens continued producing fresh food throughout the summer, much of our time was spent planning, collaborating, and preparing for an exciting season ahead. Every meeting, every conversation, and every new partnership brought us one step closer to creating lasting opportunities for our schools, neighborhoods, and the people we serve.

As our organization continues to grow, so does our vision. We remain committed to building programs that are sustainable, educational, and rooted in community. This past month reminded us that meaningful growth often begins long before anyone sees the harvest.

Growing Through Partnership

One of the greatest blessings of this work is that we never do it alone.

During July, we had the opportunity to meet with our partners from the City of Chattanooga's Department of Community Development, the Master Gardeners of Hamilton County, community leaders, and dedicated volunteers as we continued shaping the future of the Jessie Igou Community Learning Garden.

Together, we began developing a shared partnership framework that clearly defines how we will steward, maintain, and continue growing this valuable community resource. These conversations represent far more than planning meetings. They represent a shared commitment to ensuring the garden remains a place where neighbors gather, children learn, volunteers serve, and fresh food continues to bring people together.

Strong partnerships are the foundation of lasting impact. When organizations, schools, volunteers, businesses, and community members work toward one common purpose, everyone benefits. We are incredibly grateful for each person and organization that continues to invest their time, knowledge, encouragement, and resources into this work.

At Hardy Elementary School, we also had the privilege of meeting with teachers and school leadership as we prepared for the 2026–2027 school year. Together, we explored new ways to connect the Community Learning Garden with classroom instruction through hands-on learning experiences that support Tennessee Academic Standards while encouraging curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship.

Some of the best classrooms don't have four walls.

That belief continues to guide our work as we create meaningful learning experiences where students can ask questions, solve problems, discover new skills, and experience firsthand the connection between healthy soil, healthy food, and healthy communities.

Growing Behind the Scenes

Although many people experience SEED Chattanooga through our gardens and community events, much of the important work happens behind the scenes.

Throughout July, we continued strengthening our organization by improving internal systems, expanding community partnerships, pursuing new funding opportunities, preparing grant proposals, and planning educational programming that will serve even more students and families throughout the coming year.

As a young nonprofit, we recognize that sustainability means more than maintaining beautiful gardens. It means building a strong organization with thoughtful leadership, responsible stewardship, and a clear vision for the future.

Every grant application completed, every partnership established, every volunteer welcomed, and every conversation held helps lay another brick in the foundation we are building together.

While much of this work happens quietly, it is essential to ensuring that SEED Chattanooga continues growing in ways that create meaningful, long-term impact throughout our community.

As our organization continues to grow, we remain committed to thoughtful stewardship, meaningful partnerships, and creating programs that have lasting value. Every decision we make is guided by our mission and our responsibility to the students, families, volunteers, donors, and community partners who have placed their trust in us. We are building more than gardens. We are building an organization that will continue serving Chattanooga for years to come.

August Brings Us Back to the Garden

Now comes one of our favorite times of the year.

August gives us the opportunity to celebrate everything our gardens have produced while preparing them for another growing season.

This month, we invite our community to join us for two special volunteer events as we harvest the fruits of summer and prepare our Community Learning Gardens for fall planting.

Together, we'll harvest fresh vegetables, prepare our raised beds, plant cool-season crops, and help prepare the garden to once again become an outdoor classroom for Hardy students this school year.

One week later, we'll gather with neighbors, volunteers, families, and community partners to harvest, plant, and continue building a welcoming Community Learning Garden that brings people together through education, service, and stewardship.

Whether you have volunteered with us from the beginning or are considering joining us for the very first time, we would love to welcome you.

There is always room in the garden for another set of hands, another willing heart, and another person who believes that small acts of service can create lasting change.

Looking Ahead

As we move into the fall season, there is so much to look forward to.

Over the coming months, we will continue expanding educational opportunities for students and families, strengthening partnerships throughout Chattanooga, increasing volunteer engagement, enhancing both Community Learning Garden sites, and creating even more opportunities for people to connect with fresh food, sustainable gardening practices, and one another.

We are also excited to continue developing new collaborations with schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations that share our vision of creating healthier, stronger neighborhoods through education and access.

Every new partnership expands what is possible.

Every volunteer strengthens our mission.

Every student reminds us why this work matters.

Everything we do continues to be guided by one simple mission.

Teaching Soil. Growing Food. Building Futures.

Those words are much more than our tagline. They represent the promise we make to every student, every volunteer, every partner, and every community we have the privilege to serve.

Before I close, I simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to every volunteer who has spent a Saturday morning in the garden.

Thank you to every teacher who has welcomed outdoor learning into the classroom.

Thank you to our board members, community partners, sponsors, donors, neighborhood leaders, and supporters who continue believing in our mission and investing in the future of Chattanooga.

Thank you to everyone who follows our journey, shares our story, encourages our work, or simply stops by to ask how the gardens are growing.

Your support means more than you know.

One of my favorite things about gardening is that it teaches patience. We plant seeds long before we ever experience the harvest. Building stronger communities works much the same way. Every relationship we build, every child we teach, every volunteer we welcome, every partnership we strengthen, and every garden we plant is another seed of hope for the future.

When I look across our gardens today, I don't just see vegetables growing. I see students discovering new possibilities, volunteers finding purpose, neighbors building friendships, educators inspiring the next generation, and a community investing in one another.

That is the harvest I am most grateful for.

When I look at where SEED Chattanooga was just a year ago and where we are today, I am filled with gratitude. We have grown because so many people have chosen to believe in this mission and walk alongside us. Together, we are creating places where learning comes alive, neighbors become friends, and communities discover what is possible when they grow together.

The best is still ahead, and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish together.
